Health Sciences Career Academy Grant Application

Program overview -
The Health Sciences Academy Grant program supports students who would like to engage in research opportunities to explore career options, develop technical and interpersonal skills, and gain experience in working in a collaborative research/laboratory environment. Students may apply for funding for either Spring 2019 or Summer 2019 research opportunities. Grants will not exceed $3000.

There are many opportunities for undergraduate research which cannot provide full funding, and the Health Sciences Academy Grant will support students by providing a stipend for living expenses so that students can pursue their research aspirations and gain valuable experiences in their career development processes. We welcome applicants of all health and life science related interests – whether you would like to work in clinical research, gain wet lab experience, or explore qualitative research options, we can help to fund your desired opportunity!

The goal of this grant opportunity is to fund research positions which are unpaid but add significant value to an individual’s career development goals.

Eligibility -
A) Undergraduate Homewood students pursuing career interests in healthcare, public health and/or life sciences interested in gaining research experience (laboratory, clinical, or qualitative). Applicants must be current students to receive grant (seniors graduating in May 2019 may apply for a spring 2019 grant but will not qualify for a summer 2019 grant).
B) Applicants must identify a specific, unpaid research opportunity that is valuable to their career exploration and goals and that will provide access to skill development (i.e. working on a collaborative/independent project) and mentorship (consistent meetings with PI or graduate researcher).
C) Applicants must provide a position description for the role. If the lab doesn’t provide a specific description, applicants must work with their PI to generate a description to be provided. The description must include the position expectations and responsibilities, as well as technical and transferable skills that will be used in the position.

Expectations of grant recipients -
1. Meet with the Health Sciences Academy coach before beginning to determine specific and measurable professional development goals for the research experience.
2. Meet with the Health Sciences Academy coach for at least one mid-experience check-in to assess progress and experiences.
3. Meet with the Health Sciences Academy coach after the research experience to reflect on learning experience and future professional development goals.
4. Write one blog-style post to share about their grant experience with other Health Sciences Academy students.
