Director of Music/Organist at Potomac United Methodist Church

Director of Music/Organist


General – The current position includes being the Organist and Director of Music, but could be broken down into 2 positions. The Director of Music and Organist must share the joy of music with the love of God’s people. If broken down into 2 positions, they must meet and mesh thoroughly before any agreement can be made and they must meet and consult regularly. The Director of Music will be responsible to plan and implement the music program for the Church. 
Reporting Relationship – The Director of Music will report to the Pastor for direction relative to the music program. The Pastor is also responsible for work hours and time off. The Parish Administrator will coordinate office facilities for day to day operations. 

Specific Duties – 
Director of Music 
- 15-20 hours a week 
- Plan a comprehensive long-term music program following the liturgical year 
- Be available to work closely with the Pastor throughout the year including special events, Christmas, and Easter 
- Recruit and form collegial relationships with all choir members 
- Choose soloists, singers for special numbers 
- Select music for the choir, soloists, and organ each week 
- Plan and provide musical direction for 10am Sunday service, and lead weekly rehearsals for the Chancel Choir 
- Maintain the music program including choir rehearsals through the year, including the summer 
- Hire a substitute choir director for planned absences 
- Purchase music for and maintain the music library including the supervision of volunteers to help manage the library 
- Work with the Pastor to include a small orchestra in special worship services throughout the year 
- Assist the Children/Youth Choir Director and their choir members during church services as needed and work with Children/Youth Choir Director to create opportunities to participate in special worship services with voice and instruments throughout the year 
- Coordinate the facilities requirements for the music program with the office staff 
- Provide appropriate input to the office staff for the bulletins and other calendar events 
- Manage music program within the annual budget 
- Plan and direct a ‘Community Concert Series’ including recruiting volunteer musicians and conducting rehearsals as well as look for other opportunities to extend the musical presence of the church into the community 
- Attend the weekly staff meeting 

Organist 
- Collaborate with the Director of Music and the Pastor 
- Willing to assist choir members in learning parts and, when necessary, finding extra rehearsal time to assist singers 
- Assume responsibilities for funerals and weddings 
- Plan and direct the music for weddings and funerals with the Pastor and family
