Frederick County, VA (pop. 88,830) located at the northern entrance of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, just 50 minutes west of Dulles International Airport and 75 miles from Washington, D.C., is seeking an energetic individual who possesses an inclusive, proactive leadership style, and the ability to quickly develop an understanding of the pulse of this community.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a record of success directing a local government's planning efforts, possess excellent management skills, and value a diversity of ideas in order to arrive at insightful, well-informed and balanced decisions. The Planning Director is a key member of the County's management team reporting to the County Administrator.

The position provides staff support to the Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors and must develop and maintain a keen grasp of issues affecting the community. The Director supervises a staff of 10 requiring an accomplished leader who can manage personnel, multiple projects and programs including workflow, budget, and community relations. Responsibilities include implementing planning projects in a timely manner, overseeing departmental reports and presentations, and maintaining an awareness of State level activities and initiatives affecting the County.

The successful candidate must possess strong interpersonal, public relations, and communication skills in order to facilitate the development of pragmatic, lasting solutions working with and through various officials, staff, and citizens/customers. The position requires a Master's Degree in urban planning, public administration or a related field and eight years directly related progressive planning experience. Four years of experience in a supervisory capacity, and AICP Certification are desired.

This position is open until filled. Submissions will be properly vetted by Frederick County Government professionals. Interviews and reference checks will be conducted for those determined to be best suited for the opportunity. Finalists should be interviewed in Frederick County, VA during the month of February or early March 2021.
