Virginia Native Plant Society Natural Resource Management Internship at Huntley Meadows

This internship is designed to give interested college students or recent graduates the opportunity to work with professional park staff to preserve and enhance native plant communities and wildlife habitats at a 1,554 acre wetland preserve. The focus of this internship will be improving, monitoring, documenting and researching native plant populations within the park. It provides practical experience in the skills and abilities needed for a career in wildlife management and environmental sciences. This internship is a $3,000 award offered by The Friends of Huntley Meadows Park.

PERIOD                                 Somewhat flexible but approximately May - August 2021

LOCATION                          Huntley Meadows Park

Alexandria, VA 22306
APPLICANTS           College students or graduates, preferably with a major in resource management, biology, botany, or environmental science.
DUTIES                     
Natural Resources
-Assist resource management crew with habitat management for wetlands, meadows, and forests. 
-Promoting native plant communities by controlling invasive exotic plants.
-Planting and seeding native plant species
  
  Research
-Assist with water quality assessments.
-Participate in monitoring and documenting invasive species
-Vegetation classification, monitoring, recording.
-Map rare plant species using GPS and GIS

  Native Plants
    -Assist with our native plant herbarium, logging data, preserving samples etc.
  -Use GIS software to document and record significant plants, trees and plant communities. 
  -plant native plants and seed as part of our ongoing restoration efforts following our construction projects
-Work with staff on environmental education programs and visitor services.
